What better movie to watch on Memorial Day weekend than Battleship. Based on the Hasbro game this movie is actually inspiring and a fun romp giving the military the kudos they deserve. The movie starts off with an international fleet playing war games in the Pacific when elsewhere a signal has been launched into space toward another planet in the Goldilock zone (where planets are at the “just right” mark in relation to their neighboring sun). As predicted by one of the scientists involved, the signal has the effect of the Conquistadors invading the Yucatan and brought an alien race knocking on earth’s door set for an invasion.
Though the plot may be a little tired of the screwed up Lieutenant who undergoes his defining moment in a battle against all odds, it is still a great film that shows the spirit of the military with their undying efforts to never give in despite overwhelming odds. The best example of this is portrayed by Colonel Gregory Gadson who plays a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who is struggling with the loss of both his legs and the feeling of being “half a man.”
The special effects were flawless and it was pretty ingenious the way they incorporated the use of the game’s traditional grid work for plotting out the enemy’s location. I also thought it was great to see the enemy’s ballistics shaped like the game’s pegs. But the true highlight of the film was to see the USS Missouri take sail again with the assistance of some of her original crew. [For those that do not know her history, the USS Missouri, or “The Mighty Mo”, was one of the most decorated ships in the Pacific Theatre and home to Japan’s formal surrender in World War II.]
Overall I give this film a two thumbs up. Why anyone would see a movie based on a videogame and expect amazing plot lines to ensue is beyond me. Instead, watch the film for the ultimate "feel good" feeling and awesome special effects. It will have you laughing and cheering and just plain having fun.
