Kill Theory - Movie Review!

kill theory

Kill Theory is another Netflix recommend (with a second recommendation from IMDB). Me thinks the search engines of each know me too well…That being said, this is the first movie in the 8 Films to Die For series that I have actually enjoyed without too many eye rolling experiences.

I will say that, in my opinion, the movie starts off poorly. We are given the villain who is being released from a mental hospital and find out his back story. *yawns* This actually helps because you really don’t need the “aha!” reveal at the end. We know right off the bat what the killer’s motive will be and can ignore the whole mystery angle.

Then the movie starts getting better.

Enter the college kids celebrating graduation at an isolated location. We get to see a bit of their personalities, how they relate to each other and also get a quick snapshot of their relationships to each other. Thankfully the stereotypes are not gag worthy and I could actually see them as being real people and not just fabricated for the film industry.

And then things get interesting.

I will add that when I first stated watching this movie I couldn’t help but think of the Criminal Minds episode where the psychopath locked three girls in a room with the same mission – kill your friend in order to save yourself. Kill theory took that basic idea and ran with it. Whereas there are similarities between the two, there are also dissimilarities as well.  The group of college kids had options – the van, boat, or motorcycle – and weapons at their disposal. They were not locked in a single room without food or water or basic amenities.  They were taunted with more avenues of hope to cling to before those were shattered by the killer who sat and waited to pick them off should they not follow the rules he set for them.

I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot to you because I really think you should watch this. I was impressed by how well it was done and how the actors really kept in character. Cheesy beginning aside, this definitely was not a waste of time.

Here are the technical’s:

A group of college students visit a secluded vacation home to celebrate their upcoming graduation. The fun doesn't last long when a sadistic psychopath forces them to participate in his deadly contest. The rules are simple -- in order to survive they must kill each other. As tension builds, and relationships begin to crumble, they realize that only one can make it out alive. Could you trust your boyfriend? Your girlfriend? Your best friend? Only one can go home. So who will be the last man or woman standing?
