28 days after animal activists unwittingly unleash a highly contagious virus into the populous; Jim awakens from a coma to find an empty hospital. After acquiring some clothes and a few provisions he scavenges from the lobby, he sets out to find that not only is the hospital empty, but the city itself appears to be deserted as well. It isn’t until he stumbles upon a few of the infected in a church and is rescued by Selena and Mark that he finds out what has happened while he was sleeping.
Not fully understanding what has occurred and the danger they are in, Jim sets off to find his parents. It is his reckless behavior out of ignorance that leads to Mark’s death. Not soon after, they find two more survivors and learn of a transmission offering salvation. The four leave the city to find the source of the transmission and find out there are dangers to be had from more than the infected.
28 Days Later was released in 2002 starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Megan Burns. Directed by Danny Boyle, the success of the film helped produce a sequel 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel and a comic book series.
For me, what sets this movie apart from other survival zombie-type situations, the story doesn’t revolve around the infected showing the brutality and gore. Instead, the movie takes a more humanitarian angle showing the desolation, struggle and hope that the survivors experience.
