31 Days of Horror…Carrie (1976) Movie Review!

CARRIE HEADER

Carrie White isn’t your normal teenager. Raised by a mother who is a religious zealot, Carrie has grown up to be a very quiet, awkward teenager who is often shunned at school by her classmates. After an incident in the girl’s locker room causes several of the popular girls to taunt Carrie, their punishment is meted out by the girl’s gym teacher. Their detention causes rebellion, and vengeance, in one girl while another seeks to make amends for her actions by convincing her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom in her stead. But what none of them know is that Carrie has a secret. When a horrible prank is enacted against Carrie, the participants at the dance find out just what that secret is and nobody is safe from her vengeance.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, Carrie was written for the screen by Lawrence D Cohen and directed by Brian De Palma. Carrie White is played by Sissy Spacek who was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance along with Piper Laurie who plays Carrie’s mother. The film also stars Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt, and John Travolta. As with most successful horror films, Carrie has been subjected to a sequel, a made-for-television remake, a Broadway musical, several parodies and stage productions and is currently being remade once more for a tentative 2013 theatrical release.

Though critics today state that the movie is a bit dated, I still find this to be one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel and is wonderfully filmed, directed and cast. Aside from clothing styles, the stereotypes and bullying are still relevant enough for today’s generation. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie played phenomenal roles and filling those shoes will be very difficult indeed.
