From the moment I first saw the movie Pitch Black I was in love. Second only to the Alien series this movie ranks as my top science fiction horror film of all time.
From the very beginning the movie grabs you as the crew is abruptly awakened after the ship is punctured by debris, many of which instantly kill the captain leaving the docking pilot in charge of landing the ship when they spiral into the atmosphere of a nearby planet.
With the majority of the crew lost and only a handful of the original passengers alive, they find out one of their fellow passengers is in fact a dangerous criminal being transported back to prison. As they search the planet for water and supplies, not to mention a way off of the planet, they soon discover Riddick is the least of their concerns. For beneath the surface of the planet lies a network of caves housed by thousands of carnivorous creatures that cannot come onto the surface while the three suns rule.
But an eclipse is coming.
And darkness will fall upon the planet at any given time.
Directed by David Twohy, Pitch Black stars Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick in a ground breaking role that spawned a full length feature film sequel, a short animated sequel, a movie tie-in novel, a prequel and a video game.
Part of what I love most about this movie isn’t just the excellent casting and the well paced storyline mixing mystery, science fiction, a bit of drama and horrific elements…it’s the filming. The planet the survivors land on has three suns (all of which give off different lighting) and the washed out colors from each sun makes the movie unique in many ways. I also absolutely loved the brief glimpses of the creatures as the survivors are being hunted in the dark truly playing upon the fear of the unknown in the darkness surrounding us at night.
All in all I think this movie was a win. Rumor has it there is yet another full length feature film with Vin Diesel on the books and this viewer cannot wait to see what they come up with next in the franchise.
