For fans of The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone and other shows of their ilk, tonight’s 31 Days of Horror feature is Trilogy of Terror starring Karen Black in three bizarre tales.

Directed by Dan Curtis and released in 1975, Trilogy of Terror was originally intended to be a pilot for a television anthology series which failed. All three stories are based on short stories written by Richard Matheson and adapted for the film.

The first short titled Julie, based on Matheson’s “The Likeness of Julie,” follows the tale of a college student who becomes obsessed with his teacher to the point of harassment and blackmail. The ending of course presents a twist the student never saw coming.

The second short, Millicent and Therese, is based on Matheson’s “Needle in the Heart.” This bizarre tale has Karen Black starring in two roles as twin sisters, one good and the other evil.

The third short titled Amelia is based on Matheson’s story “Prey” and is the most widely known story out of the three tales and is still reputed to be one of the most terrifying. Karen Black stars as Amelia, a young woman who purchases a Zuni tribal doll as a gift and unwittingly unleashes an evil spirit which terrorizes her in her apartment one night.

I must say when I first saw this film as a child I was terrified of that little guy. My parents owned a statue made from volcanic rock from Hawaii and I will say I never looked at it quite the same way after the movie and was grateful when it disappeared. Watching these tales again after so many years I am not ashamed to admit that after waking up at 4am I didn’t exactly put my feet down next to the bed but rather leapt to the safety of the covers from a few feet away. Even this big girl gets the willies while roaming around a dark house half asleep with the lights off…
