Six shots, five dead and the police close the case in record time. The evidence is staggering against one man and everyone involved believes it to be an open and shut case with only one question: why. Everything is running smoothly until the suspect asks for one thing in his defense: Jack Reacher.
Finding out who Jack Reacher is proves to be an easier task for the prosecution than finding out where he is. Before they get a chance to investigate further into his location, Jack finds them and their seemingly perfect case is not so “open and close” after all.
Set and filmed entirely on location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tom Cruise stars as the legendary Jack Reacher, ex-military investigator. Jack Reacher is based on best selling author Lee Child’s novel One Shot which is based on the military sniper’s creed “one shot, one kill.”
I haven’t read the Reacher series yet. There have been too many other mystery series that I have been involved in to start another, yet each time I have been to the book store I pick one up and debate over buying it. After watching the movie the odds have increased and this series has bumped up higher on my “to read” list. I have been told by many that the single complaint before going into the movie was the casting of Tom Cruise in the leading role due to Cruise’s smaller stature. When asked about Tom Cruise being cast in the role, Lee Child is quoted as saying “With another actor you might get 100% of the height but only 90% of Reacher. With Tom, you'll get 100% of Reacher with 90% of the height.”
I will have to read the books to be a better critic on comparison however, I can say without a doubt that the movie Jack Reacher is one fun ride and an effective thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. Having lived in Pittsburgh my entire life I can also say that Tom Cruise did this city justice. It is refreshing for once to watch a movie based in Pittsburgh and actually see Pittsburgh.
