31 Days of Horror! DeepStar Six Movie Review!

Miles beneath the oceans surface a team of engineers man a prototype rig funded by the United States Navy.  The crew is nearing the end of a six-month tour (two months longer than planned) and their nerves are wearing thin as they attempt to prepare a missile base for the military.  When a cavern is discovered beneath the proposed missile site and a possible delay is on the horizon should a new site be scouted, a decision is made to simply blow the cavern up and proceed as originally planned.  What they didn’t plan on was waking up an uncategorized sea creature that could potentially be dated back to primordial times.

Written by Lewis Abernathy and directed by Sean S Cunningham, DeepStar Six stars Greg Evigan, Nancy Everhard, Nia Peeples, Matt McCoy, Cindy Pickett and Miguel Ferrer as the hapless crew who wind up doing more damage to themselves by sheer stupidity than the creature could ever do.  Released in the same year as several other deep sea monster flicks DeepStar Six holds it’s own versus others with larger budgets.

Say what you will about this movie but this is one of my favorite disaster / monster movies from the ‘80’s.  Maybe it is my love of B-films or simply my obsession with Godzilla movies as a kid but this movie does have some substance to it.  The acting is pretty good all things considered and the creature…well I did mention I like the Godzilla movies right?
