31 Days of Horror! Dread Movie Review!

Tonight’s movie pick is based on a short story written by one of horror’s infamous authors, Clive Barker.  Dread is based on Clive Barker’s short story by the same name found in his infamous collection The Books of Blood, Volume 2.  Director Anthony DiBlasi adapted the story for the screen and also directed it.

Stephen, played by Jackson Rathbone, is in search of a thesis for his class.  When he befriends Quaid, played by Shaun Evans, he is introduced to the idea of facing the beast, or, put simply, facing his inner fears.  Stephen then recruits Cheryl, played by Hanne Steen, to be the project’s film editor.  As the three of them embark on their “fear study” they uncover some terrible secrets about their classmates and themselves.  As they obtain more footage, Quaid begins to show his true colors and Stephen begins to suspect there is something not quite right about his newfound friend.

Dread is one of the 8 Films to Die For series and is executed quite nicely.  It fits more into the psychological subgenre of horror but the movie still keeps you engaged throughout.  I did find that Quaid’s back story was a bit more interesting and would have loved to see the movie based on it instead but I can live with what my imagination can come up with for now.

This wraps up this year’s 31 Days of Horror!  Though not as well executed as last year I do hope you enjoyed the journey just the same.  Until next year…keep the doors locked and night light’s lit because you never know when the boogey man will come to visit…
