It’s the 4th of July and four graduating friends
celebrate the holiday at the beach as their final farewell before college. On the drive home, they accidentally hit a
man in the road. Seeing their futures at
stake with an accidental death on their records, the four decide to dump the
body in the water hoping the fish would destroy any evidence and they would be
free from persecution. The four vow to
never speak of the incident again changing their lives, and relationships,
forever.
Flash forward one year.
College is done for the semester and Julie James, played by Jennifer
Love Hewitt, is heading home for the summer.
On her first day back in town she receives a letter simply stating: I
know what you did last summer.
Frightened that someone knows her secret, Julie seeks out her three
partners in crime to determine who sent the letter. Together, this hapless foursome tries to
solve the mystery. As the anniversary to
the 4th gets closer, the taunts grow more violent and soon they
realize they are being stalked by a madman.
I Know What You Did
Last Summer also stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan
Phillippe. Written for the screen by
Kevin Williamson, the movie was based off the best selling young adult novel by
the same name written by Lois Duncan.
As ‘90’s slasher films go, this is one of the better ones
from that decade. My only true criticism
is that they picked the wrong character to survive. I found Julie to be annoying and rude at
times and just plain whiney. Overall,
this is a great movie to watch when you want something mindless and nothing
better is on tv.
