When a string of bizarre deaths and disappearances begin
occurring on the campus of Pendleton
University, one student
begins to see a pattern linking each to that of an urban legend. When her suspicions are shared with faculty
and friends, nobody believes her. As the
body count rises she begins to suspect the murders are mere taunts and the
killer may be closer to her than she thinks.
On the surface, Urban
Legend has all the makings of a great slasher film. Folklore has always provided enough shock and
awe to build plausible deniability within a movie setting. Add to that the back story of a massacre that
may or may not have occurred on campus and you have the ultimate setting for a
kill fest. Unfortunately, it falls flat
of its intended course with the big reveal at the end that only leaves the
viewer feeling somehow cheated.
Love it or hate it, Urban
Legend is but one movie in the late ‘90’s to ride on the coat tails of the
giant Scream. Starring Alicia Witt, Jared Leto, Rebecca
Gayheart, Michael Rosenbaum and Joshua Jackson, the movie is entertaining for
those that have a soft spot for an urban legend or two. It is also endearing to watch simply for the
performances of John Neville, Julian Richings and Robert Englund.
