Book Review! Cop Town by Karin Slaughter

In a word: riveting.

Karin Slaughter was recommended to me many years ago when I worked at a bookstore.  She has been on my ‘to-read’ list yet somehow, another book always seemed to get in the way.  When I was granted the opportunity to read an advanced copy of her newest book, Cop Town, I was elated!  And I must say, I was not disappointed in the least.

Cop Town starts out with a bang, literally, as two of Atlanta PD’s finest are gunned down in an alley.  One officer, Jimmy Lawson, survives after the shooter’s gun jams and the whole department is on the lookout for the killer.  The entire department goes out on the lookout for the shooter yet it is only Maggie Lawson, Jimmy’s sister and fellow police officer that believes there is much more going on.  For in Atlanta, Jimmy and his partner are not the first police officers to be shot: there is a cop killer on the loose.  Yet Maggie’s theory is disregarded.  After all, it is 1974 and women aren’t exactly welcome on the Atlanta, PD.

Enter Kate Murphy, a rookie cop who gets partnered with Maggie and is thrust smack dab in the center of the investigation.    Together these two unlikely partners stumble their way through one event after another as they get closer and closer to solving the case.

Cop Town is an edge of your seat thriller that will leave you guessing as to who the culprit is up to the very end.  It is also a book about self-discovery as the two cops, Maggie and Kate, learn an important lesson on empowerment.  Each has grown up in separate worlds yet they both share the same drive to succeed in a man’s world and the desire to gain the respect they deserve.

If you are looking for a good thriller then you have found one in this book.  It is available to pre-order now and will hit bookstores on June 24, 2014 nationwide.  I don’t think you will be disappointed in the least.
