Between the years 1971 and 1983 Anchorage Alaska suffered at
the hands of prolific serial killer Robert Hansen. During this time, Hansen abducted and raped
as many as 21 women (possibly more). When
he was captured in 1983, Hansen only admitted to murdering 17 women though
police suspect there are many more.
The Frozen Ground
is a 2013 movie starring John Cusack as Robert Hansen and Nicolas Cage as the State
trooper who finally captured him.
Vanessa Hudgens stars as Cindy Paulsen, the 17-year old victim who
escaped Hansen’s clutches in 1983 and helped investigators narrow down and
later convict him.
I have read several reviews that believe the movie to be “too
slow” with “not enough action” to keep them entertained. This is a dramatic thriller presenting the
actual investigation that led to the conviction of a serial killer and is not a
hyped up action movie filled with shock and awe to wow the masses. The fact that this movie outlines the hard
work of the investigative team, the struggle of the young girl who identified
and later helped to convict a man who was respected in the community of
Anchorage, should be enough to keep the viewer watching. The performances were well above board and
the story moved along at a reasonable pace considering the subject matter.
If you watch a lot of procedural dramas in the line of Law & Order or Criminal Minds then this is a movie for you. I don’t think you will be disappointed: I know
this viewer was not.
