31 Days of Horror – The Believers (1987)

Today’s viewing takes us back into the late ‘80’s with a tale focusing on a bastardized form of the religion Santeria and the unfortunate psychiatrist who unwittingly becomes a target.  Directed by John Schlesinger, The Believers stars Martin Sheen as Cal Jamison, a psychiatrist who moves to New York with his son months after the death of his wife.

Wanting to start a new life, Cal works with the NYPD and is called in to help with a case when a police officer is suspected of killing a young boy in a ritualistic fashion.   Robert Loggia co-stars as the Lieutenant in charge of the investigation.  As the two begin to dig deeper into the investigation, they soon discover the conspiracy behind the murders is far wider than they anticipate.

Aside from the obvious time markers of using pay phones and land lines vs. cell phones, etc, this movie really isn’t dated to the point of it being ineffective.  Though it may not have the high intensity or gore associated with most horror films, the premise is creepy enough and leaves you suspecting just about everyone.

All in all not a bad pick to start the month off.  Stay tuned for more adventures in my 31 Days of Horror countdown…
