Filmed in both French and English,
Saint Ange (also known as House of Voices) is an excellent ghost
story. Set in the French Alps in 1958, Saint Ange centers on Anna, a young
woman who was hired to help clean an orphanage that is closing down. When she arrives, all but one of the children
have left the orphanage after finding families to live with. The remaining child isn’t really a child but
a disturbed young woman who acts like a child.
Anna is not there long before she begins to hear the sound of children
playing in the halls. She begins to
suspect that the Orphanage holds a terrible secret and Judith, the young
orphan, holds the key. But Anna has a
secret of her own.
Written and directed by Pascal Laugier, Saint Ange stars Virginie Ledoyen as Anna with Lou Doillon, and Dorina
Lazar. If you are a fan of ghost stories
and haven’t watched this yet, I highly recommend it. Ghost stories are plentiful these days but
rarely are they done so well.
