Eleven years ago Kaylie and Tim Russell suffered a severe
trauma after the deaths of their parents.
Upon their deaths, Tim was convicted of murdering their father and was
committed to a mental health facility while Kaylie was placed in foster care. Upon reaching his twenty-first birthday, Tim
is released on his own recognizance. Whereas
Tim has finally come to peace with the events that transpired that night,
Kaylie has been haunted by the events leading up the murders and is convinced
that a supernatural force residing in an antique mirror is to blame. Upon finding the mirror after years of
searching, Kaylie and Tim return to the house of the murders as she tries to
scientifically prove the presence of this force and clear her brother’s name.
Sadly, I missed seeing this movie in the theaters but I was
quick to buy it on DVD when it was released.
Oculus is not your typical
slash and gore horror movie, but rather it takes the psychological approach for
its scares. The narrative of the movie
seamlessly transitions through flashbacks and alternate realities as the viewer
tries to uncover what really happened eleven years ago, and is left to decide
if the supernatural is truly occurring.
Written and directed by Mike Flanagan, Oculus stars Karen Gillan, Annalise Basso, Brenton Thwaites,
Garrett Ryan, Katee Sackhoff, and Rory Cochrane as the Russell family (both young
and old). If you are paying attention
throughout the movie (and this is one flick I would recommend you doing so),
the ending is predictable yet still effective with the suspense. A definite recommend!
