When Meg Hamilton accepts a job to restore an old mansion in the Yorkshire Moors, she gets more than she bargained for. After losing two teams, one to an accident, and the other too superstitious to work there, she is forced to renovate the home by herself - with the help of her family that is. When Meg begins to restore an altar in a sealed room, that's when the haunting truly begins.
The plot is definitely not original, nor are the multitude of events that occur within. But I wouldn't go so far as to say that is why this movie failed for me. The movie seemed to stray into too many different directions, and wound up ending in none of them that it leaves you wondering just what the heck is going on. Matthew Modine delivered a wonderfully creepy role as Meg's husband akin to Jack Torrence in The Shining (book version). Olivia Williams also delivered a decent performance as Meg. I still can't figure out why the children were even written into the script in the first place (except maybe to confuse the viewer at more than one point near the ending).
Overall, I liked this movie and yet didn't at the same time. I'm chalking this one up to what-to-watch-when-you-have-a-fever-and-are-confined-to-the-couch kind of days.
