Movie Review! Space Sweepers

Space Sweepers is a new science fiction movie released this past Friday, February 5, 2021 on Netflix.  It is regarded as the first Korean blockbuster and I have to say, this one is a landmark!

Set in the year 2092, Space Sweepers follows the crew of a space debris collecting ship, Victory.  Earth is dying, money is tight, space junk is prolific, and someone needs to clean it all up.  But it's not as easy as you would think.  You have to be fast and fearless because the competition is high while the payout is low.

For the crew of Victory, business is as usual and we get a glimpse of their individual skills and their personalities.  Though they may bicker and each have their own motives, they function seamlessly as a team.  That is, until they come across the holy grail of finds: payday in the form of a deadly robot named Dorothy.  But Dorothy isn't what she seems to be and this crew is really put to the test.

Originally scheduled for release in 2020, the movie endured two set-backs due to Covid-19 restrictions until ultimately it was decided to premiere on Netflix.

I don't like to go into details on movies (especially when those said details will ultimately become spoilers).  What I will say is that I expected this movie to be decent, but I never expected it to be as fun as it was.  This instantly became a favorite of mine and if this truly is the first Korean space opera, I really hope they continue to focus on these because it was simply amazing from the jump.  Move over Disney...Netflix just took charge. :-)
