31 Days of Horror! No One Gets Out Alive

After the death of her mother, Ambar moves to Chicago for a fresh start. But starting her new life isn't as easy as she hoped it would be. Desperate to gain falsified papers to remain the the States, Ambar makes some pretty poor decisions. Not the least of which is renting a room in a boarding house listed "Cheap rooms. Women only."

During her first night, she begins to see snd hear strange occurrences, in addition to some pretty vivid dreams. The more she tries to leave, the further she is drawn into the house and the brothers who own it.

Based on Adam Neville's book by the same name, No One Gets Out Alive is a decent horror movie even if it's peppered by the boring, predictable story of Ambar.  There are many scenes that offer the prospects of this movie being genuinely frightening, but often when it starts, the suspense is stopped by a trip to the sweatshop where she works, or a random dinner with a cousin she only just met.

Throughout we are teased with a menacing box and are finally rewarded with a thoroughly creepy creature that you truly just need to see because words would certainly fail. And this is also the part where I believe most viewers will get lost as the movie offers no explanation. Personally, I rather loved the ending this way as the viewer is left to interpret and carry on in their own imagination.

Though I'm not certain I would watch the movie again, I'm intrigued enough to want to track a copy of the book down to find out what it's like.

All in all, not a bad way to start the month of October!!
