31 Days of Horror: Wish Upon (2017)

"Wish Upon" is a supernatural horror film that takes a page from the "Final Destination" playbook, infusing the narrative with a dose of suspense and a sinister twist on wish fulfillment. However, while the film successfully captures the essence of its eerie premise, it falters in delivering a truly unpredictable plot.

The story centers around Clare Shannon (played by Joey King), a high school student who receives a mysterious Chinese music box with the power to grant seven wishes. As Clare makes her wishes, she experiences the thrill of having her deepest desires fulfilled. Yet, with each granted wish comes a deadly consequence as the mysterious force behind the box demands payment in the form of a gruesome tragedy.

One of the film's standout features is its resemblance to the "Final Destination" series, known for its inventive and macabre death sequences. "Wish Upon" embraces a similar theme of inescapable fate, as Clare and those around her become entangled in a web of doom triggered by their desires. The creativity behind the wish-related deaths adds a morbid fascination, providing moments of genuine horror that keep the audience engaged.

However, where "Wish Upon" falls short is in its predictability. The plot follows a rather conventional and formulaic trajectory, adhering closely to the tropes of the teen horror genre. As Clare's wishes escalate, the audience can anticipate the impending doom, and the film doesn't stray far from the expected outcomes.

The characters, while adequately portrayed by the cast, lack depth and development. Clare's relationships with her friends and family, though integral to the plot, feel somewhat superficial, hindering emotional investment in the characters' fates. The film's potential for exploring the moral implications of the characters' choices is left largely unexplored, leaving a narrative gap that could have added complexity to the story.

On a positive note, the production values are commendable. The cinematography captures a moody atmosphere, and the special effects contribute to the overall sense of supernatural dread. The pacing is generally brisk, maintaining a level of tension throughout, but it can't fully compensate for the predictability of the plot.

"Wish Upon" provides a decent dose of horror with its "Final Destination" inspired premise. The inventive death sequences and supernatural elements contribute to its appeal. However, the film's lack of narrative originality and character depth makes it fall short of being a standout in the horror genre. While it may satisfy those seeking a teen-centric horror flick with a touch of the macabre, it doesn't quite break new ground in terms of storytelling or suspense.
