31 Days of Horror: Day 6 — Splinter (2008)

Sometimes revisiting an old favorite is just as satisfying as discovering something new. That was the case for me with Splinter (2008). I first saw this movie years ago and loved it, so when I stumbled across it again on Amazon Prime, I knew it was time for a rewatch.

Movie Description:
When their plans for a nature trip go awry, Polly Watt (Jill Wagner) and boyfriend Seth Belzer (Paulo Costanzo) decide to check into a motel. On their way, they’re carjacked and kidnapped by low-rent crooks Dennis Farell (Shea Whigham) and Lacey Belisle (Rachel Krebs), who take the victims and their SUV to a nearby gas station. Along the way, they encounter an increasingly terrifying horde of parasites, and if any of them intend to survive, they’ll have to outsmart the deadly organisms.

My Review:
This one really holds up well. The creature effects are inventive, the tension is tight, and it manages to deliver scares without dragging down the pace. There’s a raw, claustrophobic energy to the film that keeps you on edge from start to finish, and the parasite concept feels fresh even after all these years.

Revisiting Splinter reminded me why it left such an impression the first time I watched it. It absolutely deserves its spot in the 31 Days of Horror lineup.
