31 Days of Horror: Oddity (2024)

Oddity far exceeded my expectations and stands out as a true gem in this year’s horror lineup. Most modern films tend to fall short in the atmosphere department, but this movie had it in spades. From the eerie lighting to the unsettling sound design, it drew me into a world where the supernatural is just a breath away, lurking in the shadows.

The story centers on Darcy, who, after the brutal murder of her twin sister, embarks on a chilling quest for vengeance. But what makes her journey unique is her use of haunted items as her tools of retribution. This isn’t your typical revenge thriller—each object Darcy wields holds a malevolent power, adding layers of mystery and terror as the story unfolds. The supernatural element, combined with Darcy’s descent into darkness, creates a compelling dynamic that is both emotionally gripping and deeply unsettling.

One of Oddity's greatest strengths is its ability to balance the creepy, spine-tingling moments with genuine suspense. The haunted objects feel like characters themselves, each with their own sinister history, making you want to sleep with the lights on long after the credits roll. There are plenty of jumpscares, but what lingers are the scenes that build slow, creeping dread—the kind of horror that seeps into your mind and stays there.

The performances were top-notch, with Darcy portrayed in a way that makes you both sympathize with her and fear for her soul. The emotional weight she carries adds depth to her character, transforming her revenge into something more complex than mere bloodlust. The supporting cast also holds their own, particularly those playing the ones responsible for her sister's death—each getting their due in creative, terrifying ways.

If you're looking for a horror film that delivers on both atmosphere and storytelling, Oddity is a must-watch. It brings back the kind of slow-burn horror that many films today lack, while still offering enough scares to keep you on the edge of your seat.
