Open Graves

Open Graves takes the classic “deadly game” premise and gives it a supernatural twist. When Jason (Mike Vogel) and his friends stumble upon an old board game called Mamba, they think they’re in for some harmless fun. Instead, the game unleashes a deadly curse that kills the losers in gruesome ways, leaving Jason and his girlfriend Erica (Eliza Dushku) racing to play through and make a wish before it’s too late.

This one won’t win awards for polish, but it delivers a surprisingly entertaining ride. The kills are creative, the tension stays high, and the whole “board game of doom” idea is a fun spin on horror tropes. Some of the scenes are definitely hokey, and you’ll have to suspend disbelief more than once, but that’s part of its charm.

What makes it enjoyable is how self-aware it feels. It never takes itself too seriously, which allows the over-the-top elements to work instead of dragging the story down. Add in a solid performance from Dushku and a creepy sense of fate hanging over every roll of the dice, and you’ve got a horror flick that’s easy to get caught up in.

Overall, Open Graves is far from perfect, but if you’re willing to embrace its campy edges, it’s a fun watch that keeps you hooked until the final roll.
