We’ve made it to the end — and what better way to close out 31 Days of Horror than with a classic from the early 2000s that redefined supernatural horror for a new generation?
Movie Description:
It sounds like just another urban legend — a videotape filled with nightmarish images leads to a phone call foretelling the viewer's death in exactly seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is skeptical of the story until four teenagers mysteriously die exactly one week after watching the tape. Curiosity gets the better of her, and Rachel watches it herself — giving her just seven days to uncover the truth behind the curse.
My Review:
I originally watched this not long after it was released and thought it was just okay. I’d already seen the original and preferred it, though neither lived up to the massive hype. But recently, after finally reading the book trilogy that inspired the films, I decided to revisit The Ring — and my opinion shifted.
The movie actually does a great job adapting elements from the book while making smart changes that fit the Western setting and context. The filmmakers took what was, honestly, a rather slow and dense novel and turned it into a visually eerie and genuinely tense film.
In the end, I have a newfound respect for the movie. It’s creepy, moody, and unsettling — and while the curse may have started with a tape, this film still holds up two decades later.
