For today’s installment, I went with a film that had been on my radar all year: 28 Years Later. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I was eager to see how the story of the rage virus had evolved—and whether it could recapture the intensity that made the original so unforgettable.
Movie Description:
It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.
My Review:
This was perhaps my most anticipated movie of the year. I’m a huge fan of the franchise, and though I’m not normally drawn to zombie movies, the first movie completely won me over. These aren’t slow, shambling undead—they're fast, they’re dangerous, and they bring real tension.
Unfortunately, while 28 Years Later started off strong, it fell apart somewhere in the middle. At times, I felt like I was watching a series of loosely connected clips rather than a cohesive narrative. To say it was disjointed is an understatement. The promise of the opening sequences didn’t carry through, and the story lost focus in a way that was frustrating for someone invested in the world.
I want to say I enjoyed this movie. I really do. But I can’t. Fans of the franchise may find moments of interest, but for me, it was a letdown compared to the high bar set by the original.
